Memorial Day is a federal holiday on which we commemorate those Armed Forces service members who died defending our freedom. Over the extended weekend, May 27th – 30th, a number of festivals, events, and shows across the state of Alabama will take place, giving you the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the sweet smell of liberty. Here are a few happenings you might want to keep in mind:
Old School & Blues Festival – Huntsville, AL
The Old School & Blues Festival is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this Memorial Day Weekend. Head out to the Huntsville Dragway on Saturday to catch some soul-filled tunes and don’t forget to prepare for hot weather.
Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Festival – Decatur, AL
If you have never seen dozens of hot air balloons suspended in midair within the same square mile, then the Hot Air Balloon Festival on Saturday and Sunday is your chance. Your feet might even have the opportunity to leave the ground, as some balloon owners will give free rides to spectators.
Blue Star Salute Memorial Day Celebration – Montevallo, AL
Looking for an event more themed to the essence of Memorial Day? On Monday, the American Village in Montevallo is hosting the Blue Star Salute, featuring costumed historical interpreters, military equipment displays, and even a speech portraying General Douglas MacArthur. Live music and food will also be available for this great all-around Memorial Day event.
Fort Morgan Memorial Day Tribute – Gulf Shores, AL
Similar to the Blue Star Salute, the Fort Morgan Memorial Day Tribute will also feature historical interpreters. The interpreters will wear military uniforms from the fort’s Civil War occupation period as they guide tours of the historic grounds. Artillery and small arms displays will take place, as well. Don’t forget to drop by the beach when you leave!
Montgomery Biscuits vs. Jackson Generals – Montgomery, AL
Make a Memorial Day weekend trip to the capital city to see its beloved baseball team battle it out on the diamond. The Riverwalk area where the stadium is located offers many other attractions that could make it a fun trip, including a Blues Cruise in the Alabama River.
