Alabama Sales Tax Holiday: July 21-23

The Legislature created the three-day sales and use tax holiday in 2006 to help trim costs for parents. Popular items include:

New Arrival: Hoka Bondi 8 Running Shoe

The all-new Hoka Bondi 8 Running Shoe is a revolutionary shoe, redesigned.

With high-tech features like a new foam sole compound, a reconfigured upper, and a better fit for superior performance. Take a deep dive with us as we break down what’s new and why you’re going to love it.

From top to bottom, the Hoka Bondi 8 is all-new.

Building on the foundation of previous models, this update redesigned the sole. The low-profile foam and sturdier midsole make them perfect for long runs, walks, or shifts on your feet. The changes include an updated midsole composition with an extended heel for extra support. The billowed grooves on the side provide added impact protection. This midsole design gives this model a bouncy, responsive feel that keeps you on the move. While previous styles were often pillow soft, they didn’t provide the necessary firmness to support your feet. This style solves those issues with flexible cushions and superior support. And the outsole is more durable than ever thanks to targeted rubber abrasion pads. Shop Men’s. Shop Women’s. Shop all Bondi 8.

The redesign also features an all-new upper .

With an integrated memory foam collar, a more plush mesh, and a more tapered fit, it’s ready to go for summer runs. The integrated memory foam collar provides key structural support. That support keeps your ankles comfy without compromising on performance. The plush mesh upper provides room to stretch and lets your feet breathe. Thanks to the technical mesh construction, it doesn’t add extra weight, and still cradles your foot. The updated taper fit is a better option for narrow feet, and the style comes in a 2E width as well for wider feet. The upper comes together to create a structured, breathable design that’s light enough for easy runs.

This update transforms the Bondi from a squishy, pillow-soft trainer into a competent and supportive recovery shoe with the cloud-like feel you love. If you’re staying on your feet and need soft support over long distances, this shoe is for you. From long runs to long shifts, comfort doesn’t stop with the Hoka Bondi 8 Running Shoe. Shop Men’s. Hiking Through Alabama Colleges

The sun peaks out over the trees onto a wetland at the University of South Alabama’s Glen Sebastian Nature Trail -Joe Cuhaj

Please note: due to local and state guidelines surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, some information below may not be accurate. Before you travel and plan your next adventure, make sure to check each business/park/campsite for any closures or guidelines and for the most up to date information. Thank you and enjoy your adventure!

No doubt, college is often stressful, so schools do all they can to help students get some exercise, relax and take a break from their studies. While many universities and colleges in Alabama provide rec centers, several schools also have hiking trails on or near campus, so students can escape the confines of the gym and enjoy some fresh air.

In many cases, the trails are open to the public, so the entire community can use them to reduce stress and stay healthy. Whether you live near a campus, or you’re planning to visit a university or college during your travels, keep the following trail systems on your radar.

Glen Sebastian Nature Trails

Winding through the campus of the University of South Alabama in Mobile, the Glen Sebastian Nature Trail is actually a collection of hiking trails named in honor of a former National Park Service ranger who also served as chair of the university’s Earth Sciences department for almost 40 years.

Four blazed trails totaling 8 miles meander through pine forest, traverse seasonal streams, and follow the banks of a beautiful wetland where turtles leap between lily pads. Each trail is named for the color of its paint blaze—Orange, Yellow, White, and Red—and they’re all interconnected, so you can make loops of varying lengths.

University of West Alabama Nature Trails

Lace up the hiking boots, and maybe even bring along a fishing rod, and hit the Nature Trails of the University of West Alabama in Livingston.

There are 4 miles of hiking paths, including the Forest Trail, which explores an area thick with pines and hardwoods. If you take the Prairie Trail, you’ll traverse the Blackland Prairie where an ongoing restoration project is reviving native plants and animals, including Bobwhite Quail, Grasshopper Sparrows, and bobcat. If you follow the Lake Trail, you’ll circle the beautiful 54-acre Lake LU (pronounced Lake “El-Yoo”), where you can fish for largemouth bass. (Don’t forget to bring your freshwater fishing license.)

Each well-marked trail trail includes informative signs designed to educate you about the plants and wildlife you’ll encounter and encourage you to help protect the rapidly disappearing prairie.

University of Alabama Arboretum

Two and a half miles of walking trails and paths guide you through the 60-acre University of Alabama Arboretum, which was designed some 50 years ago to showcase Alabama’s rich biodiversity. As you hike, you’ll encounter a staggering number of maples, magnolias, and pines, and pass exotic trees like Chinese Pistache and Japanese Snowbell. Before you visit the trails, check out the Arboretum’s catalog to learn more about the plants you’ll see.

Donald E. Davis Arboretum

Auburn University’s Donald E. Davis Arboretum has been ranked as one of the top 30 most beautiful college arboretums in the country. A walking path winds through the 13.5-acre tract that is described as a “plant museum” designed to preserve, protect, and display living plant collections and southeastern plant communities. If you plan to visit, check out the arboretum website to see a calendar of special events like the annual Bat Walk, which is held every October.

Troy University Biking and Walking Trails

You’ll learn about 110 different species of trees as you walk the Troy University Biking & Walking Trails. There are three hiking trails that weave around the 130-acre forest and visit a stream and the banks of a tranquil 2-acre pond.

Don’t forget to bring your bike. When you’re done walking, saddle up for a ride on the adjacent 5.4-mile bike trail.

Northeast Alabama Community College

It might be small in size, but the NACC Walking Trail is still a beautiful and peaceful walk through pines and rolling hills on the campus in Rainsville. The 0.7-mile loop follows the banks of a shimmering pond.

Little River Canyon Center

The Jacksonville State University Little River Canyon Center is a remarkable facility located in Fort Payne, with the roaring Little River Falls as a backdrop.

The facility has several trails such as the Path to Learning and the Bridge Trail that teach you about the canyon and give you a spectacular view of the falls. The center features a gift shop, HD movie theater, and natural history library.

JSU has an extensive program that focuses on nature, and the JSU Field School uses “immersion based learning” to teach about the environment and nature. Fortunately, the program is available to the public and includes hikes in Little River Canyon and the Talladega mountains, paddling excursions across the region, and star-watching sessions. For event dates and times, visit the Field School’s online schedule.

Gear Review: AFTCO Shorts are Durable and Versatile

Matt Stone is an Alabama Outdoors employee and an outdoor enthusiast in the Birmingham area.

Look, I’ll always tell it to you honestly. First impressions are usually not the right impressions. And that little life lesson plays right along with my product review of the AFTCO Fishing Shorts.

aftco-shortsIt was a few years back, and a new short had arrived at our store by a brand called AFTCO. I had personally never heard of this brand. But I saw them in our company warehouse being unboxed and prepped to send out to our stores. Some of the colors were a little brighter than I typically went for (everything in my closet is blue), but I walked over, glanced at them, and decided “not for me.”

Another factor in my ambivalence toward these shorts: they are called “fishing shorts,” and all of their marketing revolved around giant deep-sea fishing boats and the people who wore them while they caught 500-pound marlin. I live in Birmingham, Alabama.

Five-star reviews for AFTCO shorts

About three months went by, and I kept hearing coworkers talk about their AFTCO shorts. I kept seeing them on more people around town, which made me keep digging around at product reviews to see if I could find the real dirt on these shorts. Most customer reviews were five stars, and yes, even to this day, do a quick Google search on AFTCO Original Fishing Shorts, and more than likely, you see five stars.

I ended up purchasing my first pair of AFTCO Fishing Shorts in 2015, and I still wear them in 2023 simply because they are some of the most durable and well-built shorts I have ever owned. They make them with a DuPont™ SUPPLEX® 3-ply nylon (say that three times fast) that is pretty much tear-proof (so far) but is also very soft and comfortable.

I realized that I did not need to be near the ocean or a bay to appreciate AFTCO Fishing Shorts. I began wearing them around the house or out-and-about running errands in town. I also wore them on my hiking trips because they are so lightweight, comfortable, and well put together.

Plus, with seven pockets, there are plenty of places to store gear. AFTCOs also have a pocket for pliers, and since I do like to bass fish, this works out perfectly. But, this pocket also has come in handy for holding a multi-tool knife when I need it close by on a camping trip.

On some of these camping trips, I am usually taking a break sitting on abrasive rocks or logs or moving through the thicker brush. The DuPont Nylon and the double-reinforced seat panel come in handy during those times. I can’t tell you how often I have worn a pair of shorts out on an adventure only to get back home with small catches in the fabric from briars, etc. Not with the AFTCO shorts.

Good for fishing, hiking, and lounging

At the peak of summer, my AFTCO shorts do a great job of reflecting harmful UPF rays away from me, and since they wick moisture away from my skin, they keep me pretty cool. I have even jumped in the water in these shorts when I did not have swim trunks with me. They dry reasonably quickly once out of the water, and since they are stain-resistant, I never worry about mud or dirt.

Overall, I love these shorts when I am adventuring outside, but what truly makes me love them is that I am currently wearing them in my office while writing this review. They have made great lounging shorts and around-the-house attire. The versatility alone, and the fact they have lasted me five years, says it all when someone asks me if I like my AFTCO shorts. Plus, they are blue!

Water-Resistant or Waterproof: What’s the Difference?

Woman wears rain jacket on wet hike

You’re on the hunt for a new rain jacket, but you keep seeing the words “waterproof” or “DWR” or “water-resistant.” There are so many terms to learn, and you’re just trying to stay dry. Luckily, the confusing language is easy to break down. Once you know the lingo, you’ll know immediately if a product is water-resistant or waterproof.

Droplets on Water-Resistant FabricWhat makes clothing water-resistant or waterproof?

Simply put, DWR, or “durable water repellent,” is a chemical that repels water. When applied to the surface of a fabric, DWR allows the fabric to repel water better. This repellent may seem like the cure-all, but there’s a lot more when it comes to keeping you dry.

Little boy wears rain jacket in stormHow do you rate whether fabric is water-resistant or waterproof?

HH ratings, or Hydrostatic Head ratings, are the level to which a fabric is resistant to water. A garment’s HH rating shows what kind of conditions it’s meant for. The scale can range from 1,500mm to 40,000mm+. Ranges within the scale provide the weather conditions meant for each range. The larger the number, the drier you’ll stay.

Man wearing waterproof jacket reaches into springWhat is water-resistant?

Water-resistant jackets are designed for those days when you expect a light shower or two. These jackets are scaled at 1,500mm-5,000mm. Water-resistant jackets are treated with DWR for a light contact of rain. Also, they don’t have taped or sealed seams. This means that you might get a little wet if that small shower turns into a heavy rain. However, they’re perfect for light rain and cool temps!

Happy couple wearing waterproof jackets in rainWhat is waterproof?

Waterproof jackets are the way to go if you’re expecting a heavy rain and want to stay dry. With a rating of 5,000mm+, these jackets typically come treated with DWR along with a built-in membrane lining. This membrane lining helps to ensure you stay dry. The seams of a waterproof jacket often come fully sealed or taped as well.
Who knew that there was so much in the making of rain jackets? Finding just the right jacket can get confusing, but now you’re ready to conquer the next rainy day.
