Each year leading into the holidays, Alabama Outdoors offers a limited edition holiday shirt featuring a holiday-themed design. This year Alabama Outdoors partnered with AAF of Birmingham to find local talent through a design contest. We would like to congratulate Savannah Kurtz from Ashville, Alabama as the winner and creator of our official Alabama Outdoors Holiday T-Shirt design. Her design features a cozy A-frame cabin nestled in the pines, reminiscent of many winter scenes here in Alabama. We sat down with Savannah and asked her some questions!

Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself?

A: I just got home after exploring the west and living out of my van, Clifford, for the past 6 months! Lots o’ desert climbing and mountain summiting and thanking God for creating such a beautiful world to explore.

Q: How did you hear about our t-shirt contest?

A: I saw a post about this contest while I was using wifi at Jackson Lake Lodge. I’m glad I saw it when I did because it was the last day to enter!

Q: Were you familiar with Alabama Outdoors before? If so, tell us a little about that.

A: Yes, long-time fan of AO! Support your local gear outfitters!

Q: Where do you live? Have you always lived in Alabama?

A: Home is in the woods of Ashville, Alabama! My family and I lived in Pennsylvania when I was a wee child before moving here. I lived in a van this summer, which felt like living everywhere and nowhere all at once!

Q: Can you tell us a little about your design and what inspired you to create it?

A: I have a Pinterest board dedicated to tiny cabins and A-frames. I’ll build my own in the woods someday and you can come and stay! 

Q: How long have you been an artist or designer?

A: I’ve been a professional designer for 2 years, but I’ve loved creating in many ways for as long as I can remember.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do outdoors?

A: Rock climbing! Climbing has unlocked places in the US that I wouldn’t have thought to visit otherwise, like the top of the Grand Teton in Wyoming or the middle of nowhere Joe’s Valley in Utah. Want to get into it? Try climbing at the local gym @bhamboulders!

Purpose

Calling all creatives in Alabama! See your design come to life. Alabama Outdoors is partnering with AAF Birmingham and holding a design contest for students and creatives to create a new t-shirt design for our Fall/Winter 2022 season. The winning designs will be used on our new product line of Alabama Outdoors brand Pima Cotton long-sleeve tees and featured in Alabama Outdoors five retail locations as well as an online web store. Designs will also be featured on our social media, printed materials, etc. with a special shoutout to the artist.

Guidelines

• Access Alabama Outdoors Fall T-Shirt Guide HERE
• Designs must appear native to the Southeast.
• Design must be the original work of the submitter.
• Design must include a front-pocket design with no more than two colors.
• Main back graphic must contain no more than 6 colors.
• Graphics must be in vector form.
• Designs must meet brand and t-shirt standards and guidelines.
• Graphics must be original work designed by the contest participant and have not been used previously for commercial purposes (including freelance websites such as Fivver, etc.).
• Participants must live in the state of Alabama.

Participation

The competition is open to all students, freelance designers, and all creatives within Alabama.

Submission

• Main back graphic images must be designed to fit a 10-inch by 10-inch (10”x10”) space.
• Front pocket designs must be designed to fit a 3-inch by 3-inch (3”X3”) space.
• Designs must be submitted electronically in a vector format (pdf, etc)
• Entries must be submitted using this form: Alabama Outdoors x AAF Fall T-shirt Contest Submission Form
• Limit (2) submissions per participant.

Submission Deadline

• Contest Begins: Monday, July 18th, 2022
• Submission Deadline: Monday, August 8th, 2022, 12:00 noon.
• Winners will be notified via email by August 16, 2022. 

Judging

A committee of Alabama Outdoors employees will judge and select up to 10 styles to move forward to a public voting round. Entries will be judged on their visual appeal, adherence to the concept prompting the contest, quality of design, and ease of reproduction through screen-printing. The polling link will be (and can be) shared publicly. The community voting round will be live from Tuesday, August 9th, through Friday, August 12th at 11:59pm CDT. Each voter may vote only once but they may vote on their favorite design they would love to see created. Additional submissions may be selected as winners. Once the community voting round is over, the Alabama Outdoors committee will take into account the poll as well as the initial judging concepts and guidelines and will select up to 5 winning styles (note that less than 5 winning designs is possible). The final selection of winners will be decided by Alabama Outdoors. Alabama Outdoors may request additional tweaks/changes to winning designs.

Copyright

By submitting a graphic design for entry in the competition, the designer acknowledges that they are the original creator of the design. The designer also certifies that the design does not infringe upon the rights of any third party and that it does not violate any copyright. Alabama Outdoors will acquire ownership of all winning contest submissions by assignment of copyright, and the winning designers will disclaim any trademarks and without limitation, all other rights related to the design upon being selected by Alabama Outdoors. Winning graphics cannot be sold or redistributed to others.

Prize

Winners will have their design(s) showcased and sold in Alabama Outdoors five retail store locations and website. Winners will receive (1) Swag Bag that will include (1) AO t-shirt with their winning design, (1) AO Nalgene Bottle, (1) AO $200 Gift Card, and a plaque presented by AAF Birmingham. Alabama Outdoors is not responsible for lost, late, misdirected, incomplete, illegible, or otherwise unusable entries, including entries that are lost or unusable due to computer, internet, or electronic problems.

Freshwater Land Trust‘s 10th Annual Land Aid event is coming up, and we’ve got tickets to give away!

This year’s Land Aid event takes place on Friday, September 14th at Avondale Brewing Company. The headliner? Birmingham’s very own Will Stewart, joined by special guests The Green Seed and Rebecca Egeland. Come by when doors open at 6:00 p.m. for fun, food trucks and giveaways, including a $100 gift card from us here at Alabama Outdoors. The best part? All proceeds benefit Freshwater Land Trust’s conservation and trail-building efforts. Since 1996, the Freshwater Land Trust has worked to “conserve, connect, and care for land and water in Central Alabama, creating dynamic green spaces for future generations.” The Trust has protected over 10,000 acres in Central Alabama, including the Cane Creek Watershed and the Red Rock Trail System. Their work protects Alabama’s status as one of the most biologically diverse states in the country and preserves Alabama’s outdoor spaces for generations to come.

Summer is here, which means music festival season is right around the corner! From July 14th to 15th, Birmingham will once again trek out to enjoy the Sloss Music and Arts Festival at Sloss Furnaces. We’ve put together a list of ten essentials to help you stay cool and look cool through two days of music in the great outdoors.

Empty Reusable Water Bottle:

While outside food and drink are prohibited, we encourage all festival goers to bring an empty reusable water bottle. Staying hydrated is key to an enjoyable festival experience. For the ultimate in festival-friendly hydration, try the lightweight and ultra-portable Que Collapsible Water Bottle.

Day Pack:

The festival has strict rules on bag size. However, most bags under 12 x 6 x 12 will be allowed in. Find a lightweight day pack or fanny pack with comfortable straps to carry your festival essentials.

Point and Shoot Camera:

Be sure to pack your point-and-shoot cameras, disposable cameras or phones. No GoPros, recording devices or cameras with detachable lenses will be allowed in.

Sunscreen:

I want to wish a very Happy Father’s Day to my father Bob. This picture was taken during one of our first trips to the beach. My dad has taken me there so many times I’m not sure I could keep track. We have always shared a love for the outdoors, especially the oceans and its marine life. I remember one trip in particular where we helped rescue a pelican who had gotten a fish hook caught in his eye with the fishing line also going through the wing. That bird flew another day after we removed the hook and line. I have learned a lot from this man, with one of the most important lessons being that we need to take care of the outdoors and all living things that inhabit the planet. This picture is a great reminder of a time where all of those lessons began. I hope I can pass on all of my wisdom and good character to my son, as my dad has for me.
