Her design features a cozy A-frame cabin nestled in the pines, reminiscent of many winter scenes here in Alabama. We sat down with Savannah and asked her some questions!

Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself?

A: I just got home after exploring the west and living out of my van, Clifford, for the past 6 months! Lots o’ desert climbing and mountain summiting and thanking God for creating such a beautiful world to explore.

Q: How did you hear about our t-shirt contest?

A: I saw a post about this contest while I was using wifi at Jackson Lake Lodge. I’m glad I saw it when I did because it was the last day to enter!

Q: Were you familiar with Alabama Outdoors before? If so, tell us a little about that.

A: Yes, long-time fan of AO! Support your local gear outfitters!

Q: Where do you live? Have you always lived in Alabama?

A: Home is in the woods of Ashville, Alabama! My family and I lived in Pennsylvania when I was a wee child before moving here. I lived in a van this summer, which felt like living everywhere and nowhere all at once!

Q: Can you tell us a little about your design and what inspired you to create it?

A: I have a Pinterest board dedicated to tiny cabins and A-frames. I’ll build my own in the woods someday and you can come and stay! 

Q: How long have you been an artist or designer?

A: I’ve been a professional designer for 2 years, but I’ve loved creating in many ways for as long as I can remember.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do outdoors?

A: Rock climbing! Climbing has unlocked places in the US that I wouldn’t have thought to visit otherwise, like the top of the Grand Teton in Wyoming or the middle of nowhere Joe’s Valley in Utah. Want to get into it? Try climbing at the local gym @bhamboulders!

When you’re starting out running, you’re faced with a lot of “essentials”. Though, they aren’t always essential. Some runners swear by 2 pairs of the same shoes, or only running in the same style of sock, and they’ll fight to the death over running shorts inseam lengths and brands. But it doesn’t really matter.

The basic gear is simple; a good pair of shoes, a few pairs of socks, and some mix and match outfits.

When you are ready to change up your runs with different surfaces and locations, keep in mind how your shoes will perform and protect you on each surface. Like most things, trail shoes, hiking shoes, and road-running shoes are not created equal. So we broke it down for you, here are some of the best do-it-all gear pieces.

Shoes

Running shoes aren’t complicated. The basics are simple; a breathable mesh upper, a supportive insole, and a grippy outsole. The biggest difference between “road” shoes and “trail” shoes is the outsole. Road shoes use a smoother rubber, that supports your foot’s natural motion. Trail shoes have a sturdier rubber that’s durable and grips well. Fortunately, though, most road shoes can tackle basic trails with ease. Well-groomed, hard-pack dirt or crushed gravel is easy on your shoes and doesn’t require extra protection. For mixed-use shoes, a steady sole is the most important piece.

Chacos celebrated the 30-year anniversary of its popular adjustable, Z-strap sandals last year. The sandals, borne out of necessity by a whitewater/fly fishing guide in 1989, grown into a treasured accessory for everyday life in all seasons, everywhere. 

Fun Chacos facts:

• Mark Paigen, the whitewater/ flyfishing guide that created the first pair of Chacos, said he wanted sandals that would provide the support and traction of a running shoe, but let his feet dry in the sun so they weren’t wrinkled liked raisins at the end of the day.
• Originally the sandals were named after the gecko, lizards with toe pads that help them gain traction on any surface. ( The logo still incorporates the gecko.)
• Gecko sandals later became Chacos, a name inspired by the Chaco Culture Historical National Park. 
• Paigen said he worked with river guides and a German pedorthist ( a health professional trained to modify footwear and supportive devices) to develop the adjustable z-strap design of the Z/1. When they finally landed on the right design, Paigen’s best friend declared it was “Zee one!” Hence, the name.
